A Merced del Bierzo in its parcel version El Canto is a Mencía from old vines over 80 years old planted on slate and quartz floors in the town of San Lorenzo. 2015 was also the great premiere of the Argentines Gerardo Michelini and Andrea Mufatto as producers in El Bierzo.
Michelini i Mufatto is a family project created in 2015 by Andrea Mufatto, Gerardo Michelini and their children., A family project with an Argentine accent.
Coming from a family winery and after working in many places, in 2005 Gerardo Michelini buys his first vineyard in Argentina and begins his own story, in a totally independent way.
In 2008, together with his wife, the winemaker Andrea Mufatto, he founded the Zorzal winery in Mendoza and from that moment they began a personal search to create wines with a sense of place. In 2012 they started another project called Gene del Alma.
The Michelini family arrived in the city of Ponferrada following the need to continue exploring new areas. Examining the area, they came to a forgotten village of Ozuela and fell in love with the place. There they started the A Merced del Bierzo project as an allusion to the wines they make in Argentina.
The small town, with about 23 inhabitants, had vineyards that had been, for the most part, forgotten. Despite this, some were on shale-rich slopes that offered great potential and the quality of an area that deserved to be revived.
